The Great Books and Great Books: An Education for Liberty

In Civitas Outlook, Pano Kanelos portrays the Western tradition as a living, contentious conversation that cultivates intellectual humility, critical self-reflection, and the virtues of liberty by inviting readers to join an ongoing dialogue instead of mastering a fixed body of knowledge.

For the Western tradition, rightly understood, is not a political project. It is an epistemological one. And it is a cacophonous, polyphonic conversation. Aristotle sits uneasily beside Francis Bacon, who seeks to supersede him. Karl Marx and Adam Smith square off. The tradition persists not by consensus but by contestation, reinterpretation, and renewal. Its structure is dynamic, unstable, and alive. It represents not a settled body of knowledge, but an ongoing struggle to understand an infinitely complex cosmos.

Listen First, Talk Later: A Tactical Guide to Peace

LENCI: So the task, it turns out, of communicating by email and just shooting messages back and forth ended up being, I think, a really critical component of our ultimately successful conversation.

I think what was most important was that now we were working on something together. It seems mundane and you wouldn’t imagine that it could be perceived as a common enterprise. But we were trying to schedule a meeting. . .

So the back and forth that had ended with him literally yelling about me transitioned really quickly to, ‘Oh, I can’t do that because I got this,’ and ‘oh, so sorry. I’m busy then,’ and, ‘best regards’ and ‘sincerely,’ and ‘I hope we can make this happen.’

Prohuman Foundation advisor Shaka Mitchell hosted a live recording of the Come Together Music podcast at the Tomorrow City USA conference. He invited Mayor Keith James of West Palm Beach, FL, and retired Los Angeles County Fire Battalion Chief Chad Sourbeer to share unexpected favorite songs and tracks they’d like to be remembered by, revealing personal stories of independence, service, legacy, and the power of music to uncover common ground and deepen community ties.

MITCHELL: Nearly 40% of Gen Z says that they do not want to go home for family holidays because they’re anxious about having political conversations with their family. I thought. . . we’ve got to do something about this.

Some friends started getting together for something we called ‘song swap.’ It’s not really a pathbreaking idea. We got together and we listened to music. . .

So, music was bringing us together. But. . . I found out that we were learning more than just new music. We were learning about one another. When we asked for a song category about family, I heard my friend Dave talk about what it was like to drop his baby girl off at college. When we talked about a certain instrument, I heard my friend Matt talk about the relationship he had with his father.

I really believe that music helps us find deeper connection with one another. It’s such a sticky element. . . It helps us recall memories. It helps us recall even emotions.

Higher Education Doesn’t (Just) Have a Trust Problem. It Has an Incentive Problem.

Prohuman Foundation advisor Lauren Hall critiques Yale’s Committee on Trust in Higher Education report, praising it for candidly naming cost, admissions opacity, speech culture, and grade inflation as drivers of declining trust, but arguing that it understates the deeper, decades-old incentive failures at the heart of the crisis. Writing in her own Radical Moderate’s Guide to Life, she calls for restructuring federal loans, overhauling accreditation, and other approaches universities can take to restore genuine public confidence.

Despite the “brutality” of the report (per the NYT), the report still misses a lot. The report frames the trust collapse primarily as a product of the last decade: political polarization, admissions controversy, free speech failures. Fix those, and trust can be rebuilt.

I’ve argued here that this is too optimistic, because the structural problems in higher education predate the current political moment by decades. Some of them are the kinds of perverse incentive structures that survive any change in political climate. I made a similar point in response to two university chancellors who wrote an op-ed last year calling for depoliticization as though the pre-polarization status quo was unquestionably solid. It wasn’t then, and that argument hasn’t gotten stronger.

The student loan system is the clearest example.

Study: Optimism lowers risk of dementia.

In a study reported by Tracy Swartz for the California Post, higher levels of optimism were linked to a significantly lower risk of developing dementia. The study, conducted at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, bolsters other findings that suggest optimism is associated with—or may even support—long-term brain health.

There is no cure for dementia, but certain treatments can manage symptoms, improve quality of life and even slow disease progression.

For those looking to add “optimism” to their regimen of proper nutrition, quality sleep and regular exercise, knowing where to start may not be so clear.

UTHealth Houston experts say optimism isn’t just being upbeat — it also means facing life with hope and confidence that obstacles can be overcome.

What’s Wrong with Identity Politics?

The Overthinkers podcast hosts Nathan Clarkson and Joseph Holmes welcomed Prohuman Foundation advisor George Yancey to discuss his new book Identity Politics in the United States: An Exploration of Identity in Red, White, and Blue. Yancey shows that identity politics is not new and that it continues to fail (in new ways) at serving the interests of people across the social and political spectrum.

YANCEY: Today, instead of having one vision of good for everyone, you have… social identity groups…. Which means, if you’re part of one of these groups…. you’re going to be interested in supporting that side because you gain power when they gain power…. To me it’s easier to demonize people who we define as oppressors…. I may be seen as an oppressor because I’m a Christian; I may be seen as an oppressor because I’m a male; I may be seen as an oppressor because I’m in academia….

It’s easy to demonize those people, as opposed to having a system where what you’re trying to do is help everyone.

When I practiced medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, there was a staff member who traveled from floor to floor playing the harp. It would last for only 15 minutes before she moved on to the next floor, but as soon as I heard those notes, whether I was examining a patient, writing a note, or sorting through a pile of medical records, everything would slow down. I could feel my breathing ease and my shoulders relax. It was as if the collective blood pressure of the floor came down a bit.

Science tells us music doesn’t just sound good — it has a profound effect on our biology. Research shows that music can improve our mood, lower our anxiety, and even reduce pain and fatigue. Furthermore, rhythmic, melodic sounds can lower cortisol levels and activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

In the spirit of the healing power of music, here are a few songs that I return to again and again. Some give me joy, some bring me calm, some make me want to move. And all of them remind me that our bodies and minds were made to respond to the beauty and sound of music. To be moved by music is to be human.

SEAGRAVE: I think that primary sources are crucial for this as well... I think we need instructional materials that are better reflective of the complexity of historical events and peoples around the world... FARBSTEIN: People don’t need to know what it’s like in your shoes in order to relate to an experience or a sense of humanity. . . . while you don’t need to relate to having some rare condition or a disability or feeling different, I bet you relate to feeling unworthy at times. Deindividuation: Why People Change in Crowds

Cognitive scientist David Cycleback explores the phenomenon of deindividuation, illustrating how immersion into a group suspends personal self-monitoring in favor of collective momentum. He explains in his Big Ideas Substack how deindividuation amplifies prevailing group cues, replacing internal standards with the rewards of social belonging, and points out that the phenomenon is morally neutral.

In many group settings, deindividuation is not only present but actively encouraged. In concerts and festivals, synchronized movement, music, and shared attention reduce self-consciousness and merge people into a collective experience. Spiritual ceremonies use repetition, chanting, ritual, and coordinated behavior to produce a similar effect.

In more extreme cases, such as tightly controlled groups including cults, these mechanisms are intensified. Uniform behavior, shared language, and constant reinforcement of group identity weaken individual judgment and increase dependence on the group.

The mechanism itself is neutral. Whether it leads to good or bad outcomes depends on what the group is doing.

Can Words Harm?

My new measure that sparked Twitter outrage

Psychologist Sam Pratt offers commentary on his Words Can Harm Scale (WCHS), a measure of the belief that words can cause harm, which his research suggests is correlated with poorer mental health and support for censorship. After drawing heated reactions online, Pratt clarifies that the scale is a neutral, scientifically valid tool that’s needed to “understand the roots of our deepest disagreements.”

Believing that words can harm was associated with some ostensibly positive traits, like self-reported empathy and intellectual humility, but also with support for censorship and moral grandstanding — the tendency to use one’s moral beliefs to gain status over opponents.

Maybe most striking was that the more strongly people believed that words can harm, the worse their mental health tended to be. They reported more anxiety and depression, lower resilience, greater difficulty regulating their emotions, and viewed themselves and others as especially vulnerable to trauma.

We know too much about each other

Prohuman Foundation advisor Katherine Brodsky writes in Random Minds that the internet and social media have made us more connected, yet more divided by hiding complexity behind fragments of opinions, bios, and avatars. Citing new research on the polarizing effects of too much shallow connectivity, she argues that the best solution is to focus on more in-person presence and real shared experiences.

Thanks to the Internet and social media, we are more connected than ever. But we are also more divided. I think it’s making us hate each other not because of what it exposes us to, but because of what it hides. We see too much of what people think, and not nearly enough of who they are.

Rediscovering Knowledge as the Key to Reading

Two champions of knowledge-rich instruction reflect on its current momentum

For Education Next, Daniel T. Willingham and E.D. Hirsch, Jr. explain why American educators have returned to knowledge-rich reading instruction. Arguing that shared background knowledge is essential for reading comprehension, the authors predict that sequenced, knowledge-building curricula will improve reading outcomes (especially for disadvantaged students) while building civic understanding.

For decades, reading instruction in the United States has focused on helping children acquire generic, transferable skills such as finding the main idea of a passage or drawing inferences. At the same time, educators have minimized the contribution that knowledge makes to reading—the idea that knowing something about the topic of a passage helps a reader make sense of it. Advocates for the skills-based approach have argued that children clearly needed to learn skills, but they didn’t have to store much knowledge in memory; they could always look it up, especially in the digital age. Contending that children need to learn some facts made one seem a nostalgic fuddy-duddy.

But something has changed, and knowledge is having a moment in education fashion.

Young Men Aren’t Checked Out. We’ve Closed the Paths That Once Guided Them

Young men are not “checked out” or rejecting adulthood, writes Samuel J. Abrams. Instead, clear pathways, like stable jobs without degrees, vocational routes, and formative community and religious organizations, have narrowed or vanished, leaving a growing gap between aspirations and attainment. The solution, he argues in AEIdeas, lies in restoring dignified alternatives like apprenticeships and mentorship structures, not redefining manhood.

For the better part of a decade, a familiar narrative has taken hold: Young men are adrift—detached from work, disconnected from relationships, and increasingly uninterested in the responsibilities of adulthood.

It is a compelling story. It is also incomplete.

Data from the Institute for Family Studies (IFS), based on a survey of men aged 18 to 29, tells a far more complicated and revealing story: Young men are not rejecting responsibility. They are not abandoning the idea of adulthood. If anything, they are holding onto it. . . .

Large majorities still aspire to marriage and fatherhood. They define manhood in traditional terms: responsibility, sacrifice, and the capacity to provide for others.

These are not the answers of a generation in retreat. They are the answers of a generation that still believes in obligation. Yet their lives tell a different story.

Can local news save us?

We may have lost our faith in legacy news, but there’s one news source that’s continued to have our backs and our trust.

Writing in her own Spirit & Sword Substack, Alexandra Vollman describes how local news remains uniquely trusted despite facing an existential crisis driven by consolidation and the collapse of traditional revenue. She says the industry’s survival depends on a shift toward nonprofit models and “hyperlocal” reporting that prioritizes community connection over national partisan divides.

“Candidly, what a lot of people want is a source of information about their community, what’s happening in their community — restaurant openings, events,” says Metzger. “They want to be able to see their kid’s name in Little League results. And I think there’s a lot of attention on the role of local news in holding people in power accountable — that’s an incredibly important function.”

Local news also serves an important function in reducing polarization, Dunaway notes, as the issues it focuses on help humanize the community and its members.

“It focuses on the issues that remind us what we all have in common,” she says. “A lot of local politics is more about schools and your garbage collection. Everything is less about these big ideological, conflictual issues that the two parties fight about all the time.”

We’re Not Here to Just Be Moral and Then Die.

“Samson, did you see My Alps?”

Prohuman Foundation ambassador Seth Chalmer writes in his own Hamlet’s Chimera that a singular focus on altruism can cast moments of personal joy as regrettable deviations from a life of service to others. He suggests that these moments are not merely diversions from one’s higher calling, but are themselves primary (and sacred) ends that deserve to be savored without apology.

Providing diversion from fear or grief is certainly a good thing, but providing laughter and joy to people who are already cheerful is also a good thing. Kindling a torch in a dark time is certainly noble; lighting a beautiful fire in broad daylight is also great. We do not need some special reason for creating beauty, seeking to be happy, or attempting to make other people happy.

Curriculum writer Christina LaRose—a Prohuman Foundation advisor—and Sphere’s content development specialist Kobi Nelson explore how the traits highlighted in the materials, like curiosity, grit, and compassion, help students develop skills for civil discourse.

KOBI NELSON: Our content really strives to support teachers and students to develop spaces for civil discourse and viewpoint diversity. We saw the [Prohuman] character traits as a great way to ground those opportunities for viewpoint diversity and civil discourse. . . . We thought that the stories of these women were so inspiring, and we could really draw out those character traits that set the stage for a more civil society.

Trump Voters Aren’t Wrong–They’re Just Getting Bad Answers

Prohuman Foundation advisor Lauren Hall argues in Real Clear Politics that dismissing the MAGA movement as pure delusion is a “catastrophic analytical error” because it ignores genuine structural failures. Rather than reflexively defending flawed institutions, she writes, leaders must pursue the unglamorous work of actual reform to earn back the public trust.

As we prepare for the midterm elections, Democratic strategists will be hard at work analyzing how best to capture voters lost to the GOP. This year, like most midterm years, they’ll identify the same problem: Working-class Americans feel like the system doesn’t work for them. And this year, like many years, the party will treat that feeling as something to message around rather than something to actually fix.

That’s a problem.

Jo Ann Bland: The Eleven-Year-Old Who Marched Across on Bloody Sunday

In Philanthropy Daily, Prohuman Foundation advisor Shaka Mitchell honors the legacy of Jo Ann Bland, a “Bloody Sunday” marcher whose life modeled a “mature patriotism” that sought to improve the American experiment through stewardship rather than repudiation. He highlights Bland’s conviction in facing and learning from complexity: Bland rejected renaming the Edmund Pettus Bridge (Pettus was an avowed white supremacist and Klan leader).

People can handle the complexity of history, she insisted. Children can handle it too. We do no one any favors by smoothing history into something more comfortable than it was. The bridge’s name is part of the story, and the story must be told in full. Her instinct is a democratic one. A free society does not require mythmaking to sustain civic pride. Just as markets function best with accurate and transparent information, so too does self-government.

Civility in a Polite Society

Correct form can and should train the heart. But… ritual can become hollow. One can perform the rite and miss the person.

What interests me is the fault line between outer correctness and inner recognition. When propriety is severed from humane regard, the bow remains, but the bond does not. That disconnect between form and inner truth is the tension my work seeks to name….

If a culture overvalues politeness and ritual harmony, it may struggle to surface injustice. If it overvalues bluntness and individual assertion, it may fracture into contempt.

The proper response to AI disruption is not nostalgia. It is preparation.

There is a profound opportunity embedded in this shift. With AI tools, individuals can accomplish far more than they could on their own. Productivity will rise not because humans matter less, but because they can do more. The advantage will belong to those who are flexible, adaptable and highly skilled at using tools to amplify their own effectiveness.

The transition will require serious investment in education and workforce development. It will demand humility from institutions that assumed credentials guaranteed security. And it will require policymakers to balance innovation with sensible safeguards.

But the proper response to disruption is not nostalgia. It is preparation.

There’s No Such Thing as “AI Policy”

Writing in her Substack, The Radical Moderate’s Guide to Life, Prohuman Foundation advisor Lauren Hall argues that a singular “AI policy” is a misnomer and that a federal moratorium on state-level regulations is a sensible way to prevent overbroad laws. She advocates for a “techno-realist” approach that favors targeted interventions for specific harms, ensuring that Americans can build and refine these technologies before stifling their potential with premature restrictions.

Some of our fears about AI have been overblown so far. Others, like the case of the young man who died by suicide after interactions with an AI chatbot, are real and serious and demand careful attention. But precisely because AI use cases are emergent, because people are finding ways to use this technology that nobody anticipated, you need to see how it’s actually being used before you can meaningfully assess the harm. Regulating in advance of that understanding is like writing traffic laws before the car has been invented.

The social forces that hinder the acceptance of new ideas

In Big Ideas, David Cycleback explains that accurate new concepts often face early resistance and social punishment because human groups prioritize cohesion and status over potentially disruptive truths. He argues that this “social friction” is a predictable psychological response to ideas that challenge established narratives, emphasizing that Americans should evaluate claims based on empirical evidence rather than how comfortably they fit the current consensus.

One reason early accuracy is penalized is status risk. Established views are often tied to the credibility of respected figures, institutions, and group narratives. A challenge to the prevailing view is perceived, implicitly or explicitly, as a challenge to the people and structures that endorsed it. This raises the social stakes of accepting the new claim. Rejecting the dissenter is easier than revising the shared framework.

SMITH: Well, I would ask them, ‘what are your core beliefs and why do you have them?’… We may not even realize why we have the opinions we have, but if we look at our values—our values, our attitudes, our beliefs—and we do our best to figure out where they came from, and why we still have them, that’s an excellent first step, in my opinion.

What We Get Wrong About Online Toxicity

Writing in his own Flourishing Fridays newsletter, Clay Routledge reports on new research from Stanford University suggesting that people overestimate the prevalence of toxic behavior and misinformation on social media, attributing it to a large portion of users when it’s actually driven by a small, prolific minority. The researchers showed that correcting this misperception reduced participants’ cynicism and increased positive emotion. The work highlights that most people share a desire for healthier online environments.

The misperception is not rooted in confusion about what counts as harmful content. In one of the studies, participants were shown actual Reddit comments and asked to identify which ones would be classified as toxic. They were highly accurate. They understood what toxic content looks like. They simply believed it was coming from a much larger portion of the population than it actually is.

Step two would be, bring it to the debate with that respect and joy of dialogue that you heard or experienced.

When the first person quit, I thought it was a fluke. But then it happened again and again. I began wondering, what is it that I’m doing that’s causing them to quit?

Black History is American History

It deserves complete integration, not a specially designated month.

Prohuman Foundation co-founders Bion Bartning and Daryl Davis wrote in The Wall Street Journal that Black History Month, though originally intended to “honor overlooked contributions and correct historical omissions,” has evolved into a practice that mistakenly treats black history as separate from the broader American story.

When history is segmented by identity, Americans are encouraged to see parts of the national story as belonging to “them” rather than “us.” Shared ownership gives way to selective identification. Shared understanding yields to grievance. The result isn’t deeper appreciation but greater distance.

Black Americans didn’t merely experience American history; they shaped it. From agriculture and industry to constitutional law, military service, music and civil rights, the nation wouldn’t exist as it does without their contributions.

The answer isn’t to abolish heritage months out of impatience or indifference. It’s to make them irrelevant by fulfilling their original purpose.

Black History Is American History

Prohuman Foundation co-founders Bion Bartning and Daryl Davis write in The Wall Street Journal that Black History Month, though originally intended to “honor overlooked contributions and correct historical omissions,” has evolved into a practice that mistakenly treats black history as separate from the broader American story.

Each February, Americans observe Black History Month. The original intention was to honor overlooked contributions and correct historical omissions. Over time, however, it has encouraged the belief that black history exists apart from American history, rather than as an essential part of our shared story.

That belief is mistaken and corrosive. Black history isn’t a specialized field relevant only to some Americans. It’s inseparable from the nation’s founding contradictions, economic development, constitutional struggles, cultural achievements and moral progress. To treat it as a separate category is to misunderstand the American story itself.

The architect of what became Black History Month would have agreed. In 1926, historian Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) established Negro History Week, placing it in February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. At the time, black Americans were largely absent from textbooks and classrooms. Woodson viewed the observance as a corrective—a temporary intervention designed to ensure black history would be taught throughout the year as part of American history.

His aim wasn’t to segregate black history from the national narrative but to force its inclusion. “It is not so much a Negro History Week as it is a History Week,” he wrote. “We should emphasize not Negro History, but the Negro in history. What we need is not a history of selected races or nations, but the history of the world void of national bias, race hatred and religious prejudice.” Woodson wanted history to be taught fully and honestly, not as separate observances. Over time, Negro History Week expanded into Black History Month. But the original purpose has quietly been reversed. What was intended as a bridge has become a boundary.

What Americans Are Positive About

Writing for his Substack, Flourishing Friday, Clay Routledge shares findings suggesting that most Americans report progress toward an American Dream centered on freedom and family rather than wealth, view the U.S. as a vital force for global progress, express gratitude for past generations, and affirm high levels of personal agency and responsibility to improve the world.

If you spend much time consuming media commentary or scrolling through online discourse, you could easily conclude that Americans are deeply pessimistic about everything from their personal prospects to their country’s future. As we begin a new year, I think it’s a good time to step back and get a more complete picture. It turns out that positive attitudes remain common among Americans; they just don’t get much attention. These positive attitudes matter because they reveal psychological strengths that can be mobilized to address real challenges.

Why partisans disagree over the tragic shooting by an ICE agent

In The Power of Us, Anni Sternisko, Dominic Packer, and Jay Van Bavel explain why people watching the same video of an ICE agent fatally shooting Renee Good came to vastly different conclusions. They describe how social identities shape attentional biases, automatic judgments, and motivated reasoning, but suggest that these effects can be mitigated by prompting viewers to watch footage from multiple perspectives.

In a study led by Yael Granot, we tracked eye movements as participants watched an altercation between a police officer and a civilian. Social identity shaped where viewers looked, and those who focused relatively more on the officer later assigned greater responsibility and harsher punishment.

When Art Becomes Resistance

Iran: Our Home, Our Final Battle (A Poem for the People of Iran)

Writing in her Substack, This is Not a Memo, Maryam Mehrtash shares a spoken word poem, “Iran: Our Home, Our Final Battle,” as an act of witness and resistance for Iranians. Drawing on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and historical examples of art born in exile and defiance, she affirms that poetry and creation refuse erasure, preserve culture, and fuel the struggle for freedom.

Some of the most enduring works of art were born under threat or in exile. Dante Alighieri wrote his masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, while banished from his native Florence. Victor Hugo penned his monumental novel Les Misérables from exile from France. Creation, in these moments, wasn’t indulgence. It was survival.

Iran has always understood this. From classical Persian poetry, Rumi and Hafez, to the street art of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, art has been how Iranians remember who they are when power tries to rewrite them.

Is a Four-Year Degree Worth It?

If colleges and universities want families to answer ‘yes,’ they’ll need to make some changes on campus.

Writing in The Wall Street Journal, Dartmouth College president Sian Leah Beilock argues that American families are rightly questioning the value of a four-year degree amid soaring debt, job-market struggles, and ideological conformity on campuses. To restore public trust, she urges universities to prioritize affordability, guarantee strong return on investment through career outcomes, refocus on open learning rather than political posturing, emphasize equal opportunity over equal outcomes, and reinstate standardized testing to support merit-based mobility.

Our institutions must reclaim a narrower, firmer sense of our role. That means embracing institutional neutrality—or restraint, as we call it at Dartmouth—on issues that don’t directly affect our mission or core functions. When we, as institutions, rush to issue statements every time there’s a national or global controversy, we signal there’s a “right” position and that opposing views are unwelcome.

Martin Luther King’s Game Theory

Roland Fryer, writing in The Wall Street Journal, uses game theory to explain Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent strategy as a mechanism for credibly signaling peaceful intentions, separating genuine reformers from disruptors, and making repression politically costly for moderates. He contrasts this with violent protests, which pool protesters with provocateurs and justify crackdowns.

When I was young, I mistook restraint for weakness and anger for honesty. What I failed to see—and what we still fail to teach students—was that Martin Luther King wasn’t avoiding conflict. He was engineering it, on terms that made progress possible.

The 15-Year Battle for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The establishment of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday required 15 years of persistent advocacy after his 1968 assassination, with bills repeatedly introduced by Rep. John Conyers, boosted by Stevie Wonder’s campaigns and Coretta Scott King’s efforts, until President Reagan signed it into law in 1983 amid opposition. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture briefly chronicles the history of MLK Day, which is now in its 40th year.

Even though it failed to pass in the House, public support for the bill continued to grow, in no small part due to musician Stevie Wonder. The Motown singer and songwriter’s 1980 album “Hotter Than July” featured the song “Happy Birthday,” which served as an ode to King’s vision and a rallying cry for recognition of his achievements with a national holiday.

Wonder continued to spread his message with regular appearances alongside Coretta Scott King at rallies. He also capped a four-month tour with a benefit concert on the National Mall, where King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech 18 years earlier.

What I appreciate most in [Andersen’s] writing is the refusal to treat the personal and the civic as separate realms. How we soothe ourselves privately shapes how we show up publicly. Loneliness, stress, and quiet despair do not stay neatly contained. They spill outward, into our relationships, our communities, and our civic life.

Young Americans Are Turning Antisemitic

A recent survey shows a clear shift toward anti-Jewish sentiment—and it’s worst on the far right.

Cathy Young, writing for the The Bulwark, covers a Yale Youth Poll that revealed a stark generational rise in antisemitic attitudes among Americans under 35, including sharply lower support for Israel as a Jewish state, higher endorsement of tropes like Jewish dual loyalty or excessive power, and greater acceptance of targeting American Jews over Israeli policies. The survey attributes this shift—most marked among those under 35 who self-identified as “extremely conservative”—partly to younger people’s distance from historical events like the Holocaust and greater exposure to extremist content.

The survey, from the Yale Youth Poll, drew on a national sample of nearly 3,500 registered voters with an oversampling of those under 35 and contained a battery of questions that tried to tease out negative attitudes toward Israel and negative attitudes toward the American Jewish community.

One stark fact that emerges from this poll is that there has been a generational shift in a direction that has been both anti-Israel and anti-Jewish.

There are valid debates among conservatives. This isn’t one.

Conservatives must draw a bright line against the bigotry of Nick Fuentes and other extremists.

Robert P. George argues in his Substack that conservatives must draw a firm ‘bright line’ excluding extremists like Nick Fuentes and his ‘groypers’ who promote white supremacy, antisemitism, and bigotry, as these directly contradict conservatives’ foundational commitment to human dignity and equal natural rights. He emphasizes that rejecting ‘groyper’ ideologies is essential to preserving authentic conservatism.

Extremism and bigotry have no place in the conservative movement. They are contrary to the central things conservatives should be dedicating themselves to conserving, namely, the biblical principle of the inherent dignity of every member of the human family, and the civic principle that human beings are “created equal” and “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.”

Think society is in decline? Research gives us some reasons to be cheerful

Psychologist Paul Hanel, writing for The Conversation, counters popular fears of widespread moral decline by highlighting global research that suggests positive values like honesty and helpfulness are consistently prioritized by people across cultures, politics, and demographics. He cites behavioral studies showing widespread cooperation and kindness in everyday life and argues that pessimism is driven by negative media and unrepresentative online content.

In a 2022 study of 32,000 people across 49 cultural groups, the values of loyalty, honesty and helpfulness ranked highest, while power and wealth ranked lowest. The results offer little support for claims of moral decline. An interactive tool, developed by social scientist Maksim Rudnev using data from the European Social Survey, shows that the pattern remained consistent between 2002-23 across over 30 European countries.

Further studies show people’s values are broadly similar across over 60 countries, education levels, religious denominations and gender (there are exceptions of course). That is, there is substantial overlap between the responses between both groups.

I’ve been privileged to meet some extraordinary people from all walks of life, from presidents of countries to monks, to religious leaders, spiritual leaders, basketball stars to movie stars, and others. . . . What resonated with me when I met them was not their titles or their credentials. What I took away from every meeting I had, including Mother Teresa, is how each and every one of them were able to transform their purpose into meaningful action.

Scaling Belonging in an Outrage Economy

Tom Fishman joined his fellow Prohuman Foundation advisor Wilk Wilkinson on the Derate The Hate podcast to argue that depolarization efforts remain largely invisible to most Americans and need a strong “air game” of media strategy and storytelling to reach the mainstream. He stressed countering outrage-driven algorithms with hope, surprise, and tangible citizen-led results while addressing loneliness and belonging.

One of the common concerns in the depolarization space is that it seems sort of Kumbaya-ish—‘let’s all get along.’ But depolarization is full of friction. It’s full of tension. It’s full of the things that make great stories. . . . Families. . . torn apart, coming back together. School systems upended. . . political strife. . . These things are fundamentally interesting. And to what end do you harness that interest? Is it to sow fear, or is it to demonstrate the ways in which having. . . a kind of growth mindset that the Prohuman Foundation curriculum is bringing into schools. . . that these things are not just nice-to-haves.

“It’s complicated”: this would ordinarily be the laziest, most useless conclusion a writer could offer. In this case, however, it may be the thing that most needs to be said.

If there is a Jewish Nobel for saving Jews, Ahmed al-Ahmed just won it

In a Jerusalem Post opinion piece, Zvika Klein celebrates Ahmed al-Ahmed—a non-Jewish Syrian-Australian fruit shop owner and father of two—who bravely tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen during the December 14, 2025, antisemitic terrorist attack on a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, which killed 15 people. Klein likens al-Ahmed’s instinctive heroism to the non-Jewish heroes honored as ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ for saving Jews during the Holocaust, tying it to Hanukkah’s theme of pushing back against darkness with light, and urges Jewish organizations and Israel to formally honor him with gratitude and recognition.

Hanukkah’s message is not triumphalism. It is resolve. The miracle was not only that the oil lasted. The miracle was that Jews insisted on lighting the menorah anyway, in a world that had grown comfortable telling them to dim their presence. That is why Hanukkah is so emotionally charged in a year when Jews around the world are being told, explicitly or implicitly, to celebrate quietly, to hide symbols, to make themselves smaller for their own safety.

No. The answer to darkness is not disappearance. It is light.

The Perception Gap: Why We Misjudge Others and How to Fix It

James Coan, co-founder of More Like Us, shares findings that Americans dramatically overestimate how extreme, hostile, and threatening their political opponents are. Coan joined Prohuman Foundation advisor Wilk Wilkinson on Derate the Hate, identifying and describing how to fix the ensuing cycle of fear, outrage, and affective polarization plaguing the public square. His organization uses data-driven campus campaigns, social norm messaging, and simple tools like the “CAST” framework (portraying others as Complex, Admirable, Similar, and worthy of Togetherness) to correct misperceptions and cultivate a more accurate, humanizing view of fellow citizens.

Attitudes toward all sorts of groups of people have changed… have improved in many ways. And I think often taking those kinds of steps that…. I mean, it’s astonishing to say looking at, say, data on like black-white marriage. In the 1950s, Gallup interviewed. . . white Americans. Like 4% of white Americans, then, thought it was okay. Now it’s over 90%. So, it’s astounding changes in terms of how people can think and feel about those in other groups. And I think we can emulate some of those strategies that have worked before, which can include conversations and interpersonal relationships, but also involves the information environment and what we see and hear about each other.

A New Treatment for Childhood Anxiety: A small dose of independence turns out to be the best remedy.

Pamela Paresky, writing in her own Habits of a Free Mind, claims that childhood anxiety and mental health issues among U.S. adolescents have surged dramatically despite greater access to therapy, arguing that overprotective parenting and limited use of effective exposure techniques in treatment are contributing to the problem. She highlights clinical psychologist Camilo Ortiz’s “independence therapy” as a promising alternative, asserting that it reduces anxiety faster than traditional methods by encouraging children to engage in daily independent activities of their choice, thereby providing indirect exposure to risk and discomfort that fosters genuine resilience and self-confidence.

In our happiness-oriented therapeutic culture, the insight that suffering is part of the human condition—and that human growth and development is largely a product of what we do with our suffering—seems to have been lost. Instead of helping young people grapple with suffering, we’ve led them to believe that if they’re not happy, there’s something wrong, someone to blame, and some trauma-informed response to which they’re entitled.

Joining Ken Futernick for Courageous Conversations About Our Schools, Rich Harwood describes how The Harwood Institute helped transform Reading, Pennsylvania—a city plagued by poverty and mistrust—by facilitating community-led listening sessions that uncovered shared aspirations for education, bypassing national culture war debates.

Our task was first to develop a community-led, community-driven agenda around education. And everyone within Reading and outside said, “That’s never going to happen in this environment.” And yet we engaged folks all across Reading, both in English and in Spanish. We engaged leaders in in-depth individual interviews. And Ken, I have to tell you, not a single individual mentioned issues that you would hear in the culture war debates. What they talked about was where their community was, where they wanted their community to go, and importantly, they identified nine key agenda items to move education forward. None of ‘em rooted in culture war. . . . The first step was, could we engage the community in a conversation, not about problems, not about utopian visions, but about their shared aspirations for their community, their kids and education? . . . The answer was an emphatic yes.

272 Words That Changed America: What we talk about when we talk about the Gettysburg Address.

Political scientist Steven B. Smith, writing for Persuasion, argues that in 272 words at Gettysburg, Lincoln transformed the Civil War from a fight to save the Union into a struggle to create true democracy, redefining equality as a living proposition that requires continual dedication and sacrifice, and forging Americans into one people committed to a new birth of freedom.

It is an urban legend that Lincoln’s speech was written on the back of an envelope on the train journey up to Gettysburg. This is false, but in America, as the saying goes, when the legend becomes fact, print the legend. He continued to refine the text during the trip, but we know that he took extraordinary care in composing his speeches.

Hospitality is the New Noblesse Oblige: Why cultivating margin, spontaneity, and welcome to the stranger is a civic act and duty

For her own Civic Renaissance, Prohuman Foundation advisor Lexi Hudson writes that unclaimed time, emotional bandwidth, and relational capacity are scarce, but necessary resources to cultivate belonging and strong communities. She suggests that hospitality is the new noblesse oblige: a civic duty for anyone with a surplus of these resources to share them.

Hospitality can be understood as a modern analogue to what earlier ages called noblesse oblige. In medieval and early modern Europe, noblesse oblige referred to the duties tied to noble status. Aristocrats were expected to fund local works, offer protection, mediate disputes, feed travelers, and care for the vulnerable within their domain. The logic was clear. If someone possessed more land, stability, and security than others, those advantages carried obligations toward the wider community.

The substance of that privilege has changed. Few people today hold hereditary estates or political power. The unevenly distributed resource now is not land or rank. It is margin. It is time that is not already claimed. It is attention that can be offered freely. It is the emotional and relational capacity to include someone else at the table. These forms of abundance are as real as property once was, and just as unevenly distributed.

Talking People Out of Hate: Adam Grant Interviews Daryl Davis and Jeff Schoep

How does someone turn away from decades of hate? Prohuman Foundation co-founder Daryl Davis sat down with psychologist Adam Grant to discuss Daryl’s success leading more than 200 Klan members and other extremists toward tolerance. Joined by Jeff Schoep, a former neo-Nazi-turned peace advocate, they explore how curiosity, courage, and compassion—and even a simple analogy—can change the most hardened minds.

GRANT: I think the magic of Daryl Davis, if I had to break it down, I would say you’re a master at motivational interviewing… If somebody is defensive or resistant to change, the worst thing to do is directly tell them to change or attack their position. The best thing to do is to get really curious… That bypasses their defensiveness, leads them to reflect genuinely, and starts to create cognitive dissonance.

DAVIS: Yes, that’s exactly what I do. We don’t convert people… One’s perception is one’s reality. You cannot change anybody’s reality, and if you try, you’re going to get push-back. So if you want to affect change on somebody’s reality, don’t attack their reality; offer them a better perception or perceptions. And if they resonate with one of your perspectives, you have planted the seed… and it’s the introspection that does it.

Research Shows There Are No Easy Fixes to Political Hatred

For Dartmouth News, Amy Olson reports on a meta-analysis led by Sean Westwood of Dartmouth’s Polarization Research Lab, which revealed that common interventions to reduce partisan animosity—such as correcting misperceptions or encouraging civility—produce relatively small, short-lived effects. Westwood argues in the Dartmouth News article that lasting depolarization requires fundamental top-down changes in elite behavior and media incentives, alongside long-term bottom-up investment in civic education and genuine dialogue.

The co-authors report that while interventions built on genuine dialogue are difficult to scale, they remain the single most effective tool for reducing polarization and require long-term investment.

“Principles of civil discourse and respectful dialogue need to be embedded into the education system in the U.S.,” says Westwood. “The future of our democracy depends on it.”

The Key to Gratitude Is Not Focusing on Yourself

Writing for his Substack, Flourishing Friday, Clay Routledge describes what leading gratitude researcher Robert Emmons believes is the key to authentic gratitude. “Self-forgetfulness,” Emmons argues, allows us to shift attention away from our own emotions and toward recognizing what specific others have done for us. Routledge notes that studies confirm outward-focused practices, such as directly expressing appreciation to others or performing acts of kindness for them, produce greater and more enduring mental-health benefits than inward-focused self-care approaches.

For over two decades, I have been conducting research on the human need for meaning in life. When I first started this work, I viewed meaning as largely a philosophical and contemplative endeavor. After all, humans are able to ask existential questions about meaning because of our advanced intellectual capacities. But after years of conducting research and studying related scholarly work, I came to better understand that meaning is found more in socially agentic action than it is in introspection about the nature of the human condition. We find meaning by playing a significant role in the lives of others.

In Praise of Warren Buffett

In his Substack, PastPresentFuture, Dan Gardner analyzes Warren Buffett’s final letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, praising the 95-year-old investor’s humility for addressing his peers as equals, for lauding his successor’s character, and for crediting luck for his survival and success. Gardner connects Buffett’s intellectual humility to his investing prowess via habits like probabilistic thinking and openness to error.

As an investor, Buffett spent his lifetime wrestling with questions about what we can really know, how we can know it, what is beyond our ken, how our lives are shaped by forces beyond our control or knowledge, and how to accept that human understanding and power are so much more limited than we wish them to be. The result was intellectual humility. And that humility was, I would argue, an essential ingredient in his success.

As Phil Tetlock and I argued in Superforecasting, people with consistently excellent judgement tend to be intellectually humble — because intellectual humility leads to certain habits of mind that make us better at sorting signal from noise.

Kay’s organization, Freedom in the Arts, is launching a new confidential survey for artists, venues, and agents—open until December 6—to assess these pressures and create an “Art Without Fear Toolkit” with resources to support free expression.

The arts exist to bring people together through curiosity, beauty, and challenge, not to divide them through ideological purity tests. Yet across the sector, institutions designed to champion freedom of expression have become hostage to its foes.

Well-being increases when we practice grit and gratitude together.

Vicki Enns, writing for Psychology Today in 2021, explains how grit and gratitude synergistically boost well-being by reducing stress, enhancing hope, self-esteem, and relationships. She emphasizes their complementary dynamic, where gratitude refuels grit during tough times and grit sustains gratitude’s fleeting benefits, recommending daily observation, expression, and habitual practice to unlock their full potential.

Although [gratitude] is readily accessible, it is easy to lose hold of it, and our attention can move quickly to focus more on what we find stressful. Our natural survival instincts push us back toward watching out for what worries us, and problems we may be facing resurface and grab our attention.

This brings me to the other quality we all need... grit.

DERESIEWICZ: …Yale made room for a remarkable free flourishing of talent: a cappella groups, theater, student publications, etc. I was really struck by that when I got there, all these truly wonderful kids. It took me a while to start to see beneath and around that.

Beneath, meaning, a lot of covert careerism, not a lot of genuine intellectualism, a graduation-time stampede to high-status/high-wealth professions. Many of the students who came to hang with me in office hours confessed to feeling aimless and adrift. My favorites—the readers, the seekers, the “fiery particles of spirit,” to quote Alfred Kazin—confessed to feeling alienated from the institution, the system, from their peers above all.

Why I no longer engage with Nature Publishing Group

Writing for Heterodox STEM on Substack, chemist Anna Krylov declines a Nature Communications review invitation, citing the publisher’s ideological policies—from diversity quotas and “citation justice” to censorship—as betrayals of the pursuit of truth in science, favoring social engineering over merit and rigor. She calls on scientists to disengage until Nature recommits to excellence, protecting objective inquiry.

Scientific publishers play a key role in the production of knowledge — they are a pillar of what Jonathan Rauch has termed “the Constitution of Knowledge” (Rauch, 2021). The role of the publisher is to be an epistemic funnel: it accepts claims to truth at one end, but permits only those that withstand organized scrutiny to emerge from the other, a function traditionally performed by a rigorous peer-review and editorial process. This process should be guided by scientific rigor and a commitment to finding objective truth.

Unfortunately, the Nature group has abandoned its mission in favor of advancing a social justice agenda. The group has institutionalized censorship, implemented policies that have sacrificed merit in favor of identity-based criteria, and injected social engineering into its author guidelines and publishing process. The result is that papers published in Nature journals can no longer be regarded as rigorous science.

Curb Your Incivility: The Last Starbucks

Prohuman Foundation advisor Alexandra Hudson, writing for her own Civic Renaissance newsletter, analyzes a hypothetical “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episode where Larry David, after mocking a serial coffee scammer, attempts the same free-drink ploy himself. In the ironic script she penned, Larry gets publicly humiliated by a sharp-witted barista who exposes his hypocrisy, turning him into the very freeloader he despises and underscoring the fragile norms of civility.

For the uninitiated: Larry David, co-creator of Seinfeld and television’s favorite curmudgeon, went on to create Curb Your Enthusiasm—a show based on his own persona. It’s run, off and on, for more than two decades on HBO. He says he’s finished now, but who can say?

Larry tests the limits of our social fabric. He calls out the oblivious, the inconsiderate, and the freeloaders among us—those who violate the unspoken contracts of civilized life. In doing so, he becomes both violator and defender of those very norms.

What does it mean for us not to feel so separated from one another? Particularly when we face an epidemic of loneliness? What does trust mean in a society that keeps fragmenting? How do we live together, not simply vote together, but how do we live together and make things happen? So many of us believe we can’t shape our lives or our collective futures. And so what does it mean when we lose a sense of individual and shared agency, that we can’t make a difference in our lives? And what we’ve lost belief in institutions of all kinds. Not just political but… Faith institutions, civic institutions. This is a challenge for libraries, obviously. We can’t talk to our friends and family about tough issues anymore in many cases. The reason why I think we need a new civic path is because we’ve got to find ways to address these deeper issues….

A civilization without elders.

Omar F. Najjarine, in his The Autodidact, reflects briefly on the role of elders in society, noting that advanced age should reflect the culmination of intellectual, creative, spiritual, and moral growth. Citing Abraham Maslow, he describes several key shortcomings of youth that ideally improve with age, suggesting that life is something like a pilgrimage toward self-fulfillment.

By a certain age, the pleasures of the world should pale in comparison to the pleasures of the mind, of great conversation, of loving connection.

Defund the Thought Police

Consumer psychologist and Independent Center president, Lura Forcum, explains why ideas are so often judged by their source rather than by their merits. With evolutionary insights into tribal belonging, she examines how fear stifles nuance and problem-solving on complex issues like AI regulation and housing. This, Forcum suggests in How to Human, leads us to police our own thoughts. She urges purposeful merit-based thinking to ‘defund the thought police’ and to weaken the grip of polarization on our politics.

This obsession with belonging and purity has deep roots. Humans evolved to protect group membership because belonging meant survival. Our group controlled access to resources and safety—letting in people who don’t belong depleted those resources for the real group members. That wiring hasn’t changed much, even though our modern lives are abundant and collaborative in ways our ancestors couldn’t imagine.

Princeton Professor rejects “no enemies to the right.”

Conservative intellectual Robert P. George weighed in on X amid backlash to Tucker Carlson’s recent interview with white nationalist Nick Fuentes and Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts’ defense of Carlson. George reaffirms that the inherent and equal dignity of every human is foundational to principled conservatism. In his post, George asserted that white supremacists, racists, antisemites, eugenicists, and bigots cannot be accommodated in the conservative movement, as their ideologies contradict this core tenet. He distinguished defending free speech from allying with such views, urging conservatives to protect the movement’s integrity against internal threats.

A few days ago, I posted a brief statement of what I, as a conservative, seek to conserve. The first item on the list was what I regard as the foundational principle of all sound morality: the profound, inherent, and equal dignity of each and every member of the human family. Everything else I believe about ethics and politics in one way or another stands upon or presupposes that principle. Any form of “conservatism” (or “liberalism”) that denies it in principle or transgresses it in practice is alien to me.
